Since the laser power density has great influence on the cutting speed, the selection of focal length of lens is an important problem.After focusing the laser beam, the size of the spot is proportional to the length of the lens focal length. After focusing the beam through the short focal length lens, the size of the spot is smaller and the power density at the focus is higher, which is favorable for material cutting.But its disadvantage is short focal depth, small adjustment margin, generally more suitable for high speed cutting thin materials.As the telephoto lens has a wider focal depth, as long as it has enough power density, it is more suitable for cutting thick workpiece.

After determining which focal length lens to use, the relative position of the focus and the workpiece surface is particularly important to ensure the cutting quality.Due to the high power density at the focus, in most cases, the focus position is just above or slightly below the surface of the workpiece when cutting.In the whole cutting process, keeping the focus and the relative position of the workpiece constant is an important condition to obtain a stable cutting quality.Sometimes, the lens is heated due to improper cooling, which causes the change of focal length, which requires timely adjustment of the focal position.

In the process of laser application, focusing and other problems are often encountered. There are three common simple methods to determine the focus position:
(1) Printing method: make the cutting head move from top to bottom, print with laser beam on the plastic board, and print the focus point with a small diameter.
(2) Inclined plate method: the plastic plate placed at an Angle with the vertical axis is used to pull it horizontally to find the focus of the laser beam at a small area.
(3) Blue spark method: remove the nozzle, blow the air, hit the pulse laser on the stainless steel plate, make the cutting head move from top to bottom, until the big blue spark is the focus.
